Daily magnesium supplements significantly reduce blood pressure, new research reveals. Taking a 300mg tablet, the recommended dose for males, lowers hypertension and boosts blood flow after just one month, a study review found. Researchers recommend magnesium supplements be considered for people suffering from, or at-risk of, high blood pressure.

Magnesium, an abundant mineral in the body, is naturally present in many foods, added to other food products, available as a dietary supplement, and present in some medicines (such as antacids and laxatives). Magnesium is a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems that regulate diverse biochemical reactions in the body, including protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation.

Sources of Magnesium

Magnesium is widely distributed in plant and animal foods and in beverages. Green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, legumes, nuts, peanut butter,  seeds, soymilk, black beans and whole grains, are good sources.

Function of magnesium

·        protein synthesis

·        bone formation

·        regulating blood pressure

·        nerve function

·        blood sugar control

Overdose

However, having too much of something is also harmful for the body. Be mindful of your magnesium levels as excessive dietary intake.
