Has Maggi broken Indian food laws? Is it harmful for you?

The food manufacturer Nestle has removed a productfrom sale in India because of safety concerns. laboratory tests showed the noodles contained lead at levels far higher than the legal maximum. The tests also detected the chemical flavour enhancer monosodium glutamate, or MSG, which is not mentioned in the product’s list of ingredients.

Earlier tests, performed by food safety authorities in Uttar Pradesh state, showed that samples contained 17.2 parts per million of lead, vastly over the allowable limits, which range between 0.01 and 2.5ppm. Soon after, the country's food safetyagency declared Maggi noodles "unsafe” to eat.

According to Food Safety and Standards Rules, 2011, MSG, a “flavour enhancer”, should not be added to food for infants below 12 months. MSG is not permitted in over 50 items, including “Pastas and noodles (only dried products)”, but is allowed in the seasoning used for noodles and pastas.

Nestle sells about $240 million dollars worth of the noodles every year. The recall is one of India’s largest food actions. At least six states havebanned the product. The noodles cook in two minutes andare popular among children andstudents.

In India Nestlé has been asked by the regulator to recall the product and Nestlé has stopped selling it. In fact, before the order was issued, Nestlé India had announced it had stopped selling MAGGI Noodles. This is because recent developments and growing concerns about the product have led to confusion for the consumer to such an extent that Nestlé India felt it was necessary to take the product out of the market while we engage closely with the regulators and others to discuss the situation.
