Have you ever experienced a sinking feeling in your stomach when you are feeling fearful or some kind of anxiety or stress? On the other hand, when we are feeling ecstatic, we are at different energy state. These states of low and high vibrations are associated with negative and positive emotions respectively. These states often also help us to match our ‘vibes’ with specific people who express positive or negative emotions.

The law of vibration is a universal principle which states that everything in the universe is in a constant state of vibration. This principle of quantum physics can be seen in action in our daily lives. Vibrations are kind of rhythms which may happen outside the body as in environmental or seasonal changes or tidal patters as well as inside our body like physiological rhythms. Such rhythms include our breathing heartbeat and circadian rhythms. These vibrations in our body are affected by way we think and behave. For instance, anxious thoughts release stress hormones like cortisol which may increase or decrease the heart rate. Apart from these, molecules inside the cells of our body also vibrate at nanoscales (1). So, different parts as well as molecules of our body are vibrating at their characteristic sonic signatures or optimal resonant frequency. These optimal vibrations can deviate in diseased or stressed states of body.

High frequency vibrations are created when we experience positive emotions like joy, happiness, acceptance. On the contrary, low frequency vibrations arise under negative emotions or mindset like anger, fear or despair. In fact, the word ‘emotions’ denotes body movement or any kind of physical disturbance. In a groundbreaking study, Dr. David R. Hawkins, a psychologist and the Institute of Noetic Sciences, developed a scale that assigned frequency values to different emotions using kinesiology, which is a muscle-testing method to determine emotional responses to stimuli. In his best-selling book entitled “Power Vs Force”, Dr. Hawkins explains the entire spectrum of consciousness with higher frequency levels associated with love, peace and enlightenment and lower levels of anger, guilt and shame. As can be seen in Figure 1, enlightenment has the highest vibrational frequency of 700+ hertz and emotions of joy have 540 Hz. On the contrary, the vibrational frequencies associated with shame and anger are 20 and 150 Hz respectively (2). So, the good thing is that if we know how to vibrate on high levels, we can change our vibrational energies from low to high. This shift to a higher vibrational state helps to maintain good health and wellness for our mind and body.

This can be done by changing the way we think or behave. For instance, if you are angry at something or someone, your vibrational frequency is low, but if you become aware of your current negative emotions, then you can choose to move from an angry to joyous state. Though, it may seem difficult to do so but the simplest way is to generate thoughts that can make you happy at this moment, this will change your emotional state as well increase your vibrational frequency. Another way to increase vibrational frequency is to match it with an already existing high frequency, like we can spend time or converse more positive people who share positive emotions and thoughts or by reading books or material which contain positive thoughts or practicing mindful strategies like yoga, meditation, etc. As stated by sound therapist Joanna McEwen in one of her TedTalk in 2017 titled, “Why raising your vibration increases serendipity”, she said, “We can feel the vibration on an emotional level when we say that somebody’s on our wavelength, or we feel in tune with personal situation”.

Simply shifting the focus from negative to positive emotions can change the vibrational states. Also, the vibrations can be changed by consuming high energy foods like green leafy vegetables, fresh fruits, legumes, minimally processed grains, herbal teas, etc. The foods which are not considered having any valuable vibrational energy include processed foods, meat, fried foods, poultry, alcohol, dairy, etc. These findings point to an old saying “you are what you eat”. Sinatra et al., 2018 (3) has reported that Pan-Asian Modified Mediterranean (or PAMM) Diet is the best high vibrational diet. It is basically a Mediterranean diet supplemented with olive oil and nuts, and anti-aging foods like natto and seaweed. In addition to consumption of high vibrational foods, sound waves of specific frequencies can be used to decrease stress or promote relaxation and treat human diseases or disorders. So, the power of vibrations is not only limited in restoring our emotional state but it has tremendous potential in restoring the ‘energy balance’ of diseased states. Whole body vibrations (WBV) have been reported to help in neurological and musculoskeletal disorders or conditions (4).

So, the next time you tune in some radio station or play your favorite song and dance to its tunes, you are experiencing high vibrational frequency (associated with joy, happiness excitement, enthusiasm, good health, physical aliveness and strong spiritual awareness) and the cells in your body are vibrating with their internal vibrational states too. Both positive and negative emotions (poor health, anger, fear, despair, self-doubt and low self-esteem) have their own place in our lives and each of these emotions is associated with a characteristic vibrational frequency. The combination of these frequencies creates our own vibration of being. With changes in our thought patterns or the foods we consume or the books we read, we have the ability to change our vibrational frequency which can significantly impact our quality of life.
